Montenegro Wild beauty
Crystal clear water, bright white cliffs, wonderful beaches, impressive mountain ranges, peaks which touch the sky, fascinating lakes and rivers, breathtaking canyons, unspoilt nature and warm hospitality – all this and much more awaits you in Montenegro!
A small country – but, just like a colourful mosaic, the various fascinating facets unite to form a glorious overall picture. Located directly on the Adriatic, a small sea but also one of Europe’s major gateways.
The approximately 300 kilometre long coastline offers a wonderful combination of sun, sea and countryside with large and smaller bays. Each coastal town has its own history:
Herceg Novi, a carnival and artists’ city; Kotor – located on the bay of the same name, the only natural fjord in the Mediterranean – the city of architects, scientists and museums. The city and bay are listed as a UNESCO World Natural and Historical Culture Site. Budva, famous for its theatres and drama festivals with wonderful beaches and an exciting nightlife; Ulcinj, the ancient city of sailors and pirates. Each town and city has its own special flair and is well worth a visit at any time of the year.
Sailing, surfing, diving, fishing or simply unwinding – Montenegro’s coast offers an array of opportunities for an active and relaxing holiday. The underwater world is full of surprises with shipwrecks, hidden caves and countless species of fish.
Not only the coast impresses the visitors but also the inland countryside with its magnificent scenery. Each and every visit to one of the national parks Durmitor, Skutari Lake, Lovcen and Biogradska Gora is a once in a lifetime experience. The 39,000 hectare large Durmitor National Park is listed as a UNESCO world national heritage site and includes the Tara Canyon, the deepest in Europe. The park has 48 mountain peaks over 2,000 metres and 18 lakes, the Black Lake being the most famous.
Skutari Lake National Park encompasses the largest lakes in the Balkans, home to approximately 270 species of birds. Breathtaking views can be enjoyed in the Lovcen National Park while the major attraction in Biogradska Gora is its jungle – one of the last remaining three in Europe. A walk around the romantic glacial lake is especially recommended.
The Montegrenin mountains, lakes and rivers offer wonderful holiday attractions all through the year. Forest and mountain walks, mountain biking, rafting, mountain climbing, cave explorations or canyoning are the most popular activities in summer while in winter cable cars and ski lifts ferry visitors to ideal ski slopes, snowboard and toboggan runs or one can explore the magical white landscape with a horse or dog sleigh.
Perhaps the mountains are the best place to fortify oneself with the local specialities: ‘skorup’ (a soft cheese) stored in wooden barrels and curdled milk from little buckets, ‘katschamak’ (a type of polenta) with cheese, warm pita bread,’ ratschan’ (green cabbage) with smoked lamb roasted under the ‘satsch’! Or how about fresh carp or bleak fish from Skutari Lake or seafood specialities fried in olive oil at the coast? All to be enjoyed with authentic Montegrenin wines.
Podgorica and Tivat airports are just a few hours from Central Europe. Travelling by road or ship is also well worth while as the route through the countryside is also full of charms.
